Artists throughout the ages have a particular voice and platform. Whatever the creative work, the artist is attempting to connect with people to communicate a profound truth in a profound way. Marble was the medium Michelangelo chose in the early 1500s; music is the medium of choice for Beyonce. Each artist selects a medium that they can use to best relate their message and reach their intended audience. Today’s artists have new ways to express their ideas through digital mediums and avenues, which makes it easier for relatively unknown artists to gain a following. But those same digital outlets also make it more difficult to maintain your personal voice.
In this episode of Persuasion, Erin Straza and Hannah Anderson continue their new series called The Creative Process by inviting Helen Lee to a conversation about developing your creative voice and platform. Helen has worked in publishing as an editor and is now associate director, strategic partnerships and initiatives at InterVarsity Press. Her background and expertise provide keen insight into the challenges and benefits of pursuing creative work in today digital marketplace. How vital is an online presence for artists today? Is it possible to carve out a niche audience in our digital age of mass appeal and celebrity culture? How can minority voices and ideas gain a foothold in the market that seems to clamor for only more of the same thing? Conversation covers everything from developing and maintaining your unique voice to learning how to receive feedback, as well as handling rejection and finding new avenues for releasing your work. Helen shares tips specific for writers and communicators that are easily transferable to any creative outlet. Listen in for dialogue on issues like these as we process the place of your voice and platform in the creative process, then continue the conversation on Twitter @PersuasionCAPC or in the CAPC members-only community on Facebook.
