For decades, Christians have championed something called “family values.” Traditional marriage, the preservation of the nuclear family, and conservative sexual ethics were prime tenets (along with a smattering of other principles). Christians were called to uphold said family values in order to play their part in the culture wars—because the enemy would not relent in its pursuit of everything opposed to our cause. In short, the family itself was under attack, and Christians were the its only hope for survival.
In this episode of Persuasion, Erin Straza and Hannah Anderson continue their series titled Go Home! Finding Our Way. Each episode of the series explores the common assumptions regarding the home, both in the church and in society. This particular conversation dissects the notion that families are under attack. Many a Christian leader has presented evidence of this war, pointing to everything from Hollywood films to dual income families to divorce rates. The message to the church is that such attacks upon the family will continue unless Christians take a stand against such nontraditional values. But what if these aren’t direct assaults at all, but rather, these are symptoms of something that has already happened? Erin and Hannah discuss the possibility that these issues are not causing the breakdown of the family but are instead a response to something that has already happened. What if today’s atmosphere is merely the fallout from cultural shifts that happened decades ago? What does it mean to champion the family in today’s world? Is our definition of home and family contributing to its breakdown? Conversation touches on questions like these, exploring common presumptions and fallacies in an attempt to find our way home.
